Hiking
- Our home is in the midst of dozens of excellent hiking trails. Following is a sample of the types of trails that are available.
Bartram Trail: This well maintained trail extends over 100 miles and is accessible just 1 mile from the house at Wayah Road near Lake's End Restaurant (and boat rental). Follow the yellow trail markers. You can find out more about this trail at ww.ncbartramtrail.org
Appalachian Trail (AT): There are multiple public parking access points within twenty-five minutes of our house. You can drive to the top of Wayah Bald (5,342 ft.) and hike back down to Nantahala Lake via the Bartram Trail (8.0 miles) or hike to the Nantahala Outdoor Center via the AT and the white trail markers. Wesser Bald is a section of the AT which is accessed from Wayah Road and Otter Creek Road. It is a wonderful 45 minute hike from the trailhead on Otter Creek Road (about 1.5 miles after the road becomes gravel). There is a great observation tower at the top, two miles from Telico Gap.

Biking
- Tsali is the Southeast's mecca for mountain bikers and is thirty miles north of the house. Tsali has a cloverleaf system of three 11 to 13 mile loop trials along the shore of Lake Fontana. Closer, but with steeper terrain is the NOC's trail system adjacent to the whitewater facilities at the rafting takeout where the AT crosses the Nantahala Gorge.

Fishing
- Ranked one of the top fifty fly fishing areas in the country, many people come to this area JUST for the fly fishing! The Nantahala River along Wayah Road, within minutes of our home, provides a beautiful setting as well as abundant trout. There are several local guide services including Orvis School.

Whitewater
- Commercial rafting trips on the Nantahala River typically consist of half-day adventures through the Nantahala Gorge. The Nantahala is a Class II-III river and is a fine trip for both the first-timer and the experienced rafter. Families frequently enjoy this river as rafters need only weigh 60 pounds. Available watercrafts for rent include rafts, kayaks, canoes, and inflatable kayaks ("duckys").

Horseback Riding

Shopping
- Some of the closest nice shopping is in the area surrounding the train depot in Dillsboro, NC. It is about 15 minutes past Franklin, NC. There are some charming little shops including several arts & crafts galleries and a wonderful pottery studio and shop.
Highlands, NC definitely provides the finest shopping in the area. It is about an hour drive, so it is a very nice day excursion. Enjoy a nice lunch or early dinner while you're there.
